Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program wrapping up—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Fan Response
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Has the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
