UK Extends Methanol Toxicity Warning Roster with An additional 11 Countries
The UK government has placed 11 new destinations to its official alert roster regarding the risks of toxic alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.
This revised travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a worldwide rise in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol poisoning.
Only recently, the government had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, in response to a number of high-profile cases including the tragic demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that even minimal doses of methanol can result in vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.
What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Employed?
Toxic alcohol is a toxic substance commonly utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not meant for ingestion.
While it is generated during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the refining procedure.
But in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into alcoholic drinks to save money, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to identify.
Official Guidance for Tourists
Government representative Hamish Falconer said that each tourist should recognize the indicators of methanol toxicity.
"If you're consuming alcohol overseas, choose reputable establishments and steer clear of local brews or unspecified beverages," the minister said.
"If something feels off, for example a headache that's far more intense than typical or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor fast."
The full list of countries listed as carrying a threat of methanol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
