Meteorologists are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Continue Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Open but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with no rain and open skies. Readings are forecast to be cold, so warm wraps vital, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.

Readings Forecast to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Warnings Issued

At the same time, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this meant the weather was likely to trigger major effects across the NHS and care systems. This includes a expected uptick in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
