Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
