Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant boost to United’s attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.

Recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
