He has maintained his innocence regarding the charges

Previous FBI director James the former director has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to lawmakers and impeding a legislative process.

Mr Comey's legal representative submitted the response on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would attempt to have the case dismissed for various reasons including that his client, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

The former director was charged just days after the former president pressured his attorney general to move forward against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald informed the judge they aimed to submit various legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a legal hearing, arguing the legal action was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was improperly assigned to handle the case.

The former director's case was first managed by the original attorney, who resigned under pressure from Donald Trump after his investigation into an additional political adversary - the New York official - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey appeared in positive mood as he walked into the legal venue on Wednesday, chatting with his legal team and sharing humor. He was joined by his wife, his wife and offspring Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration terminated.

Upon hearing to the court read his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, the defendant was asked if he comprehended the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the proceedings.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was terminated about several months into the former president's initial presidency as national leader. At the period, the director was directing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.

While in office, the director triggered a counter-response from liberal politicians when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was probing presidential nominee the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Clinton were not filed, causing criticism from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors assert the former director lied to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he misled the upper house by claiming he had not permitted a person at the FBI to leak to media organizations data about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also allege James Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, hinder and slow" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

In a video the former director published to his social media after he was indicted, he declared he was not guilty and charged the former president of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"We have been aware for considerable time that there are costs to opposing Mr Trump," he said. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he added. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The charges against James Comey surfaced after the former president posted on social media demanding his top legal official, the attorney general, take legal action against James Comey and other people.
