British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
This news arrives shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
