A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
